Installing vinyl plank over existing tile can avoid demolition, dust and disposal. It can also lock a bad substrate beneath a new floor. The correct answer comes from a six-part inspection, not a blanket yes or no.
The six checks before LVP goes over tile
1. Bond
Tap and inspect the field. Loose, tented or hollow tile is movement below the new floor. A floating plank cannot stabilize a failing tile assembly; unstable sections need removal and repair.
2. Flatness
Wide grout joints, lippage and low areas can telegraph through thin products or make click joints flex. Fill joints and isolated low areas with a compatible patch, then verify the floor against the LVP manufacturer’s flatness tolerance.
3. Moisture
Tile is not proof that the Florida slab below is dry. Look for efflorescence, dark grout, loose tile and prior leak history, and perform any moisture test required by the new flooring system.
4. Height
Add the plank and underlayment thickness to the existing tile. Check exterior doors, dishwasher clearance, refrigerator height, toilet flanges, baseboards, stair risers and every transition. A demolition saving disappears quickly if doors and cabinets must be reworked.
5. Surface and grout
Remove wax, grease and residue. High grout lines should be reduced and deep joints filled so the new floor has continuous support. Never assume an attached pad is designed to level the floor; it is not.
6. Written product approval
The chosen LVP installation manual controls. Confirm that installation over tile is allowed, whether an additional underlayment is permitted and what expansion gaps and maximum run lengths apply.
Overlay versus tile removal

What about laminate over tile?
Some laminate products allow it under similar flatness and vapor-control rules, but laminate’s wood-fiber core is less forgiving of water. In Florida kitchens, entries and slab homes, SPC/LVP is generally the safer overlay candidate. The product manual still decides.
